Don’t Let Summer Sabotage Your Strength!

Summer is here and while you're enjoying your BBQs, vacations and the longer days, it’s easy to let our fitness routines slip and put strength training on the back burner, thinking you’ll just “get back to it in the fall.”

But here’s what many women don't realize, strength training isn't only about boosting metabolism and bone density. It's about preserving your independence and vitality as you age.

Making strength training a consistent habit throughout the year does the following:

  • Protects your balance and coordination to reduce the risk of falling as you age - falls are the #1 cause of injury for women over 50. Strength training keeps your legs and core strong to maintain balance, and a strong upper body to help catch yourself and reduce injury if you do take a fall.

  • Supports your pelvic floor health - incontinence and prolapse as a result of hormonal shifts can negatively impact your quality of life. Lifting weights with proper breathing and core bracing strengthens your pelvic floor to help prevent "the leak" and the drop of pelvic organs.

  • Boosts your cognitive functioning - the brain fog that often accompanies menopause can be frustrating and frightening. Evidence shows that strength training has a positive effect on memory and even reducing the risk of developing dementia.

  • Builds your resilience - Strength training isn’t just for the physical strength, it builds your mental toughness, confidence, and the belief that you can handle whatever menopause (or life) throws your way.

Here's my summer tip to stay strong:

Aim for two 20-minute full-body strength sessions if your schedule is packed. Your future body will thank you and reward you with greater energy and freedom to move with ease.
